EMPIR project publishes freely available appearance measurement training videos on YouTube
The videos regarding the metrology of appearance cover a variety of topics and will help increase photometry and radiometry expertise across National Metrology Institutes
Emerging national metrology institutes (NMIs) across Europe aim at improving meeting stakeholder needs and increasing participating in EURAMET joint research projects despite of limited staff numbers and a lack of specialist knowledge in certain areas. EURAMET’s Technical Committee for Photometry and Radiometry found that there were not sufficient training and specialisation opportunities, which made it difficult for emerging NMIs to further develop their knowledge and skills. The EMPIR project Supporting smart specialisation and stakeholder linkage in Photometry and Radiometry (20SCP01, Smart PhoRa) aimed to bridge this gap by developing the metrological expertise of NMIs using ‘smart specialisation’ principles, which will bring together local authorities, academia as well as industry experts to build long-term growth and development strategies. The project focusses on the following areas first: metrology for smart specialisation for photometry, metrology of appearance, metrology of fibre options, and metrology of photovoltaics.
The videos
To offer easily accessible training opportunities, the project has decided to start a YouTube channel where online training videos will be shared.

The project coordinator Stefan Kück (PTB) comments on the early dissemination of the project:
“The SmartPhora project equipped emerging NMIs and DIs in photometry and radiometry with specialized knowledge through webinars and training courses, enabling them to efficiently fulfil their roles within their countries. This resulted in improved services for users in both domestic and neighbouring markets. By coordinating efforts and addressing specific needs identified by stakeholders, the project minimized duplication of work among NMIs/DIs, ensuring optimal use of resources and capabilities. In the long run, SmartPhora's knowledge development among participating NMIs/DIs will positively impact economic, social, and regulatory aspects in these countries. Addressing metrological and quality infrastructure challenges in photometry and radiometry will enhance competitiveness for businesses, attracting foreign investments and fostering job creation. Improved compliance with health and safety regulations will further enhance social well-being. Additionally, better measurements will promote energy and resource efficiency, benefiting the environment.”
This EMPIR project is co-funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme and the EMPIR Participating States.
